Mark Twain High School Alumni Association, Inc. set up this endowment to provide scholarship aid for qualifying descendants of Mark Twain High School graduates. From 1921-65 the school served students from coal towns Hot Coal, Big Stick, Woodbay, McAlpin, Stoesbury, Tams, Ury, Helen, Amigo, Sophia, and Slab Fork. It was located in Stotesbury, Raleigh County, WV. The first graduating class was 1924. Robert C. Byrd, valedictorian, MTHS Class of 1934, served in WV Legislature. (1947-53) & Congress (1953-59). He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1958, Senator Byrd held every major leadership position, was third in line for the presidency and a noted Senate and constitutional scholar.
