Margaret’s husband Jack, her children and her grandchildren started this fund after her death in 2004. Born in Princeton, she spent most of her life in Fayette County. She attended Parkersburg Business College and worked in her parents’ Oak Hill grocery store. In 1948, she married war veteran John W. Vargo. They moved so Jack could attend the Dental School of the University of Maryland, and returned to Fayette County after graduation. They raised four children who all pursued professions in medicine or dentistry. In 1980, their elder daughter and son-in-law were killed in a tragic automobile accident. Granddaughter Jacqueline Ann Martin wrote, “She raised me with the wisdom and compassion of a grandmother, the strength of a warrior, and the spirit of youth.” Margaret’s son, local endodontist Dr. Jim Vargo, hopes that some deserving recipient of this scholarship will return to this area to work. The scholarship is need-based and will be awarded to a Fayette or Raleigh County high school graduate who is pursuing an education in dentistry, medicine or dental hygiene at a college or university in West Virginia.
