Mary Louise Klaus died in 1987, exactly 27 years before the formation of her memorial scholarship was announced. Her siblings were unaware that there was a life insurance policy in her name, and they were the beneficiaries. Upon discovery of this fact, they decided it would be fitting to donate the proceeds to BAF and create a lasting memorial to this career educator. Thus, Karl J. “Jack” Klaus of Beckley; Charles R. “Bob” Klaus of Liverpool, N.Y.; David R. “Dick” Klaus of Beckley; and Charlotte A. Gaydos of Bel Air, Md., established a need and merit based scholarship that will be awarded annually to a graduate of a public high school in Raleigh County who will attend any accredited vocational school, college or university. Mary Louise Klaus earned a B.S. degree and later a Master’s degree in guidance and counseling from WVU. She taught at Clear Fork and Shady Spring high schools, and served the county as director of guidance, career education and testing. She received national recognition for her contributions to the field of vocational guidance and was involved in numerous civic organizations.
