Julia Long and her husband Joe established this scholarship fund in memory of her parents. Ruth O’dell Hutchinson and Paul Hutchinson, Sr. were both born in Beckley. He started Colony Drug Inc. in 1950 and sold the business in 1975 when he retired. They raised three children: Paul R. Hutchinson, Jr., Mary Hutchinson Stover, and Julia Hutchinson Long. The family has many ties to Beckley College and its successors. Each of the three Hutchinson siblings attended Beckley College and both Paul and Mary taught at the College of West Virginia. Six of the Hutchinson's grandchildren attended or were graduated from the College of West Virginia. Joe played for the Blue Hawks basketball team and graduated from Beckley College in 1957 before going on to school in New Mexico. After retirement, Joe and Julia moved back to Beckley and became active at Mountain State University where they established a scholarship fund through the MSU Foundation. When the status of MSU changed, they wanted the scholarship to continue to benefit a graduate of their alma mater, WWHS, and to support the higher education institution on South Kanawha St. as it continues to evolve. Hence the scholarship will now be used to attend WVU Tech.
