Anna M. Collins & John Maynard Collins Scholarship Fund
This scholarship endowment benefiting Shady Spring High School was established in 2024 with a testamentary gift from Stephen Edward Collins. It also serves as a permanent memorial to his parents John Maynard and Anna Margaret Maddy Collins.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Collins were Raleigh County educators who had taught a number of years at SSHS. Stephen was born May 1941 at Beckley. After high school, Steve graduated from Virginia Polytechnical Institute and State University (VA Tech) and received his master’s degree from Wayne State University. He served over 20 years in the United States Air Force retiring as a major. A longtime member of Shaw Heights Baptist Church in Sumter County, SC he served many years as a deacon. One individual commented following Stephen’s death, “Never saying anything bad about someone…he was giving and caring, a true man of faith. Leading by example.” An avid boater, collector and woodworker he was active in the Sumter community.
Recipients of this scholarship will be helped by the generosity and forethought of Mr. Collins. Criteria eligibility for Shady Spring HS graduating students matriculating to an accredited college/university, vocational or technical school. The student is not limited to attendance at a specific institution or to a field of study. The award is not renewable.
