Eligibility
  • Need based;
  • Student must be West Virginia resident and attended a West Virginia High School;
  • Must be accepted into the WVU Tech nursing program;
  • Must maintain a 3.0 GPA with full-time status.
Renewable:   Yes.
Apply:   No application submission is required.  Every new WVU Tech nursing student will be reviewed for consideration of this scholarship, according to the specific criteria and level of financial need.
This scholarship fund was established in 2023 to remember Mr. Elmo J. Hurst. This renewable scholarship will support WV students enrolled in WVU Tech School of Nursing in Beckley, WV.  Mr. Hurst was a great advocator of higher education. As a stock holder in three companies located in Beckley, WV that provide in-home care to the elderly and disabled, he realized there was a shortage of Registered Nurses in the Beckley area. He wanted to provide an opportunity for anyone desiring a degree in nursing to have an opportunity to do so.

Elmo J. Hurst was one of the original 10 incorporators of Beckley Area Foundation in 1985.

Confirmed in Compliance with National Standards Beckley Area Foundation is a member of the National Council on Foundations, Philanthropy WV, Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce, Charitable Gift Planners of WV and WV Nonprofit Association. The Foundation will make available for public inspection the last three years of its tax documents, including Internal Revenue Service Forms 990 and 990-T (if applicable), any audit, and its tax exempt letter. If the request for any of these documents is made in person, the requested documents will be provided on the day of the request if possible.  If the request is in writing (including email), copies will be provided within 30 days of the request. The requestor may be charged a reasonable fee for the cost of copying, plus storage. Questions concerning documents should be addressed to either the Executive Director or Board Chair of the Foundation.
