General Unrestricted Fund
A portion of the general unrestricted funds are held at each of BAF’s trustee banks. These funds came from the initial 1.1 million dollar donation made by the Dr. Thomas Walker Memorial Health Foundation in 1985. This was the first gift made to the Beckley Area Foundation. Since that time, additional unrestricted gifts have been made to this discretionary pool by hundreds of charitable friends who have supported our annual Campaign for the 21st Century or sent unrestricted memorial gifts with donations ranging from a few dollars to several thousand dollars. The income from these funds is used for the BAF Annual Community Grant Program which offers non-profit charitable organizations in Raleigh County an opportunity to submit proposals identifying current needs. Also see Webster County Community Fund, Houck Wyoming County Fund, Greater Mount Hope Community Fund, Community Fund of McDowell County, and L. Bailey Fund for Wyoming County for descriptions of BAF unrestricted endowments for other counties. Donors may establish BAF discretionary funds for the geographic area of their choice in our southern West Virginia service area.
