Word Family Fund 

This is an advised endowment set up by BAF’s first President, James W. Word, Jr. and his wife, Sallie. As a former member of the Dr. Thomas Walker Memorial Health Foundation, Mr. Word also guided a gift of $1.1 million from the Walker Foundation to establish this community foundation for Beckley. The unique life journeys and personal goals of the Word family have moved them to give back to a community that has been good to them, and has kept them involved with the Foundation for three generations. Jim died in 2004, and the fund received many memorial gifts. Sallie passed away in January 2015. The fund is now advised by their son and daughter in law, Jay and Lisa Word, along with grandsons Matt and Stephen Word, and Matt’s wife Aimee Word, current Office Manager for BAF.

Confirmed in Compliance with National Standards Beckley Area Foundation is a member of the National Council on Foundations, Philanthropy WV, Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce, Charitable Gift Planners of WV and WV Nonprofit Association. The Foundation will make available for public inspection the last three years of its tax documents, including Internal Revenue Service Forms 990 and 990-T (if applicable), any audit, and its tax exempt letter. If the request for any of these documents is made in person, the requested documents will be provided on the day of the request if possible.  If the request is in writing (including email), copies will be provided within 30 days of the request. The requestor may be charged a reasonable fee for the cost of copying, plus storage. Questions concerning documents should be addressed to either the Executive Director or Board Chair of the Foundation.
