William James Tanner established this designated fund to provide yearly distributions for AWAY (formerly known as the Women's Resource Center) and YMCA of Southern WV. “Both of these organizations hold a special place in my heart. A lady from church invited me to the Women's Resource Center to have lunch years ago, and I spent time with some of the members and it was very impactful. I've been a member at the YMCA since 1980, and I also developed a professional relationship with them through Spartan Sporting Goods and youth programs. Each organization is so important for our community, and I'm honored to establish a fund that supports them forever.” — Jim Tanner | BAF Donor A designated fund is established to benefit a specific charity, or program for a charity. Since the first designated fund was created in 1986, BAF has helped donors fulfill their philanthropic goals by supporting local organizations and their community. To date, over $6.5 million dollars has been distributed from designated funds. “AWAY is so thankful for Jim Tanner's recently established fund at BAF. These funds help our clients to get a fresh start. AWAY is able to purchase furniture, pay deposits for rent, assist with utilities, and other essential needs to help our clients get back on their feet.” — Reginia Thomas | Executive Director, AWAY “The money received from Jim Tanner's new designated fund will be critical to support the YMCA’s operations. The fund will help us with maintenance of our downtown facility.” — Jay Rist | CEO, YMCA of Southern West Virginia Anyone interested in donating to this fund may mail contributions with “Tanner AWAY/YMCA” in the memo to BAF, 1210 South Kanawha St., Beckley, WV 25801 or click the button below to donate online. In Spring 2022, BAF relocated to 1210 South Kanawha St. in Beckley. This move to a new permanent, central location has heightened the foundation’s visibility and continues to encourage community participation. The Carter Family Foundation has challenged BAF and the community to raise the remaining balance of their renovation goal ($185,000) by the end of the calendar year. All money raised (up to $92,500) will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Carter Family Foundation. “The Carter Family Foundation and Beckley Area Foundation have worked closely for many years, and we recognize the impact BAF, and their donors have on this community. Carter Family Foundation challenges everyone to contribute to the “Building for the Future” campaign to help BAF finalize the renovation project at their new location.” — Pete Torrico | Board Member, Carter Family Foundation All individuals who donate to the “Building for the Future” campaign will be listed on permanent display in our reception area. All donations to BAF are tax-deductible and will be used for the renovation of our new location. Donations can be given anonymously, in memory or in honor of someone.

Mac's Toy Fund has been helping our community for 92 years, and will be accepting online grant applications similar to last year. Rather than buy toys to distribute, Mac’s Toy Fund will offer grants to nonprofit organizations that give out toys, coats and the like to children. Applications are due by September 19th, 2022. “We know that the children we serve in this program may not ever have the opportunity to purchase a new coat. By giving them this gift of a new coat it lets them know their fire fighters care about them. Your contribution is key to our program and we can not thank you enough. We continue to grow our program and are so happy to have Mac's Toy Fund as a partner.” — Lt. Rick Fisher | President, Beckley Firefighters Association
The WWHS Class of 1967 has established a building over time scholarship fund with the help of classmate Chuck Jarrell. The WWHS graduating class of 1967 was the last class to graduate from the Park Avenue school site, now the home of Park Middle School. The scholarship is a renewable scholarship for matriculating seniors from WWHS.
“Throughout the decades, we have all benefited from our education received at WWHS and the Raleigh County school system. Today more than ever, post-secondary education, whether at traditional colleges and universities or through trade and technical schools, is critical to success in the modern workplace. Our classmates want to support graduating WWHS students who may need financial help as they seek post-secondary opportunities.” — Chuck Jarrell Classmates enjoyed another weekend event – a tour of Park Middle School (pictured). Lanny Oakes, a teacher at Park Middle School, led the tour that included visiting classrooms and the band room, sitting in the original seats in the auditorium, and going under the stage into “the dungeon” where some classmates had classes more than 55 years ago. Lanny, who teaches history and is very knowledgeable about the old WWHS, also assembled original blueprints of the building, pictures from 1967, and the last remaining band uniform from the old WWHS. Classmates were thrilled to see the changes in the building and to remember teachers, administrators, and friends from so long ago. “I particularly enjoyed the tour of the old WWHS. My parents, Betty, and Millard Jarrell, met there in the fall of 1947, when both were first year teachers. My mother had just graduated from Fairmont State College, and my dad had returned from service in World War II. As new teachers, they were thrown together in meetings and committees. They fell in love and married the next summer. My dad taught chemistry and was pleased that his students later became doctors, successful business executives at technology companies, and even an astronaut (John McBride). Mom taught distributive education (DECA) and retailing and was one of a group of teachers who started the “Dollars for Scholars” fund for student scholarships in 1959-60.” — Chuck Jarrell Anyone interested in donating to this fund may mail contributions with “WWHS Class of 1967” in the memo to BAF, 1210 South Kanawha St., Beckley, WV 25801 or click the button below to donate online. “Peggy was young when she married, and her husband asked his mother to take her to the grocery store and teach her how to shop. Her Mother-in-law was telling her what she should be buying. Peggy finally said to her "If I have to cook it and eat it, I will buy what I want." Her Mother-in-law said to her "You're a Sassy little thing aren't you." She has had the nickname “Sassy” ever since.” “Peggy loved God, her Church and was a faithful member. With over 800 community foundations already accredited nationwide, the program is designed to provide quality assurance to donors, as well as to their legal and financial advisors. “This is critically important to our donors,” said Dena Cushman, BAF Executive Director. “When people make a charitable bequest or establish a fund, they are putting their trust in us. They are counting on us to manage the investment wisely and honor their charitable wishes. The National Standards accreditation says our house is in order.” BAF works to meet critical community needs and support local causes, including animal services, the arts, civic beautification, economic development, education, health & human services, and public recreation. BAF offers a range of charitable funds, allowing donors to advance a cause, support an individual organization, or provide flexible support for community needs. In addition to affirming the organization’s philanthropic services, the accreditation validates BAF’s grantmaking practices for the nonprofit community. “Grantmaking is a lot like investing,” said Douglas Ramsden, BAF Board President. “BAF needs to assess risks, weigh potential gains, diversify assets, monitor performance and operate fairly. With our National Standards accreditation, you can be assured that we’re doing just that.” Organizations seeking to solve community challenges may have access to additional support, thanks to a new donor-advised fund established with the Beckley Area Foundation. The Vaught Fund for Social Entrepreneurship was established by Raleigh County natives Chris and Debbie Vaught. As the term implies, social entrepreneurship is a movement that seeks to solve society’s problems by applying creative, out-of-the-box thinking often embraced by entrepreneurs. “The fund’s goal is to promote and support innovation and entrepreneurship for addressing community needs.” For example, grants from the fund can help new organizations design and implement solutions for recently identified problems. Existing organizations might also expand their offerings or add a social component. “We are most excited about collaboration among groups to create efficiencies and leverage combined strengths.” — Chris Vaught “It is a pleasure to help generous people like Chris and Debbie achieve their unique philanthropic goals and realize their ability to make lasting change. Charitable giving allows you to create your own legacy and teaches the value of philanthropy to future generations.” — Dena Cushman | BAF, Executive Director Vaught is a serial entrepreneur, having launched six Raleigh County-based businesses and organizations in the last 14 years. He serves on the board of directors for several community organizations. “Through my work with Beckley Area Foundation and WV Hive, which supports local entrepreneurs, I see how non-profit organizations can fit in a collaborative entrepreneurship ecosystem.
